Daniel A. Schaefer, Ph.D. | Psychologist

Daniel A. Schaefer, Ph.D. | PsychologistI have been offering counseling services to families, couples and individuals in the Toledo area for over 25 years; first as a professional counselor, then as a psychologist.

My formal training began at Bowling Green State University where I earned a B.S. in Education. I taught in the Pittsburgh City Schools for a year before returning to Ohio to start working on my Masters degree in Clinical/Community Psychology at Cleveland State University. After a few years of private practice and getting licensed as a Professional Clinical Counselor, I started my Ph.D. coursework at the University of Toledo. My dissertation was on shame and guilt and their surprising correlations to mental health difficulties. I graduated in 1999 and became licensed as a psychologist in 2000.

Most of my clinical work is with adolescents and adults, occasionally seeing younger children as a part of family therapy. I work extensively with couples of all ages that are struggling to connect with each other more deeply. Teaching couples how to work through conflict respectfully, no matter how intense, is one of my areas of expertise. I also work a lot with men who have been wrestling with pornography, extra-marital affairs, shame, parenting difficulties, substance abuse and anger issues. With clients who present with religious commitments/beliefs, I am always interested in finding ways to bring those strengths to bear on their presenting problems. Along these lines, I have been hosting and mentoring area men in and outside of my church in a curriculum entitled Men’s Fraternity.

Finally, I have been running educational groups for men who have been arrested for domestic violence for about 5 years. I have made three presentations on domestic violence at national conferences, and wrote a chapter entitled "Offering violent men help" for the book "Beyond Abuse in the Christian Home: Raising Voices for Change" (Wipf and Stock Publishers).
